Frances Russell, MD, FACEP

Frances Russell, MD is a tenured professor of emergency medicine and advanced emergency medicine ultrasonography (AEMUS) certified. She is the ultrasound research director at Indiana University School of Medicine. She practices emergency medicine at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, the public hospital located in Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as at the Veterans Hospital. Frances earned her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. She completed her residency training at the University of Connecticut and completed an ultrasound fellowship at Rush Medical Center and Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Her research interests include point of care ultrasound for acute heart failure, undifferentiated shortness of breath and ultrasound medical education. She has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and has received grant funding from the NIH NHLBI, NIH NIBIB and the American Heart Association. Nationally, she served as the Research Officer for the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Academy of Ultrasound (AEUS) and the leader of the American College of Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Research subcommittee. In 2021, she received the AEUS Academic Excellence award, and in 2023 received the SAEM AEUS Most Influential Researcher award.
