Emergency Medicine Physicians

Emergency Services Inc.

We are a small democratic group based in Columbus, Ohio that are looking to add a few more full-time BC/BE physicians to our group. We are a “lifestyle” group, so our goal is to work on average less than the typical group. Our focus is on career longevity and we have multiple doctors in their 50s-60s that have spent their entire career in our group. Last year we celebrated our 50th year anniversary. We have been able to succeed over that period by not only being solid ED docs, but by also having some little perks that make things fun. For instance, in the past year, we have had social gatherings Axe Throwing, Golfing, Bourbon tasting, and Book Club. In the past, we’ve set up a process for meal delivery at one of our FSEDs when you are working a 12 hour shift solo to help “ease the pain”, and have now brought in Scribes (see site 5 below). These certainly aren’t make or break details, but it is the little things that help make the group stand out.

Full time in our group is 24 hours a week (averages to 13, 8-hour shifts a month). We have a templated schedule that repeats every 7 weeks for the whole year and guarantees you 7 days off in a row every 3.5 weeks. For docs who prefer to work 7 in a row, the template gives 14 days off in a row every 7 weeks. This means you can predict your entire year and start making any necessary trades as soon as the January schedule comes out.

We have a small group of dedicated nocturnists who almost exclusively use the 7-on, 7-off schedule. We also have a night differential with no minimum # of night shifts to qualify for the differential. We are a physician-owned and led Emergency Medicine group. Every single member of our group including our company president works clinically, so if something isn’t working well, we try to get it fixed quickly.

We offer partnership at three years. The buy-in is only $50 (Yes, fifty dollars, not fifty thousand). This comes with a voting share and a profit sharing bonus. All employees regardless of partnership status receive a year-end bonus which has a small component of productivity, but the rest is essentially guaranteed as long as you fulfill some very basic requirements (complete documentation on time, attend a few department meetings, etc.).

We are also looking for a physician(s) with EMS interest / experience / certification to help with our community involvement with EMS.

EMR: Epic

Malpractice: Fully covered by group, including tail coverage

Patient’s Per Hour: Our last group productivity report shows our running average among all physicians is

  - 4 days on, 3 days off

  - 3 days on, 4 days off
  - 3 days on, 7 days off

The 7-7 template is as follows:
  - 7 days on (Mon-Sun), 7 days off (Mon-Sun)
  - 7 days on, 7 days off

Site 4: Urban Freestanding Emergency Department, annual volumes of 20,000. Single physician coverage (three 8 hour shifts) with occasional APP coverage for higher volume days.

Site 5: Brand New Freestanding Emergency Department opened in March 2021: Average 50pts a day, Currently two 12-hour shifts, with goal to move to 8’s once we have more staffing. 12 hours of Scribe coverage here.

Salary and Benefits: The pay is competitive for how little we work. Full partners working only days/afternoons typically make over 300k/yr after profit-sharing, bonus, etc factored in. Full time night shift adds approximately $25k/year. Pay is transparent (including stipends for admin work) and everyone makes the same amount for clinical shifts. The benefits package is one of the best I’ve seen. Health insurance coverage is excellent with out of pocket maximum already fully covered by the group (you pocket the difference if you use less than the max). Dental/HSA/FSA, long-term disability and life insurance policy also included. Our group pays your cell phone bill, you get $5k annually in CME, and all professional fees are fully covered by the group.

If interested in learning more about our group, please reach out to our Director of Operations, Heather Goodwin. She has many more details and can get things rolling.
