OOF Awards Grant in Honor of Warren General Hospital
Projects Enhance Osteopathic Education in Northeast Ohio
(July 2015) The Ohio Osteopathic Foundation (OOF) Board of Trustees recently approved two major grants totaling $284,705 from the foundation's Warren General Hospital Fund to support osteopathic education in Northeast Ohio.
The first, totaling $84,705 was awarded to St. Joseph Hospital in Warren, to upgrade its Patient Simulation Lab and projection equipment to facilitate learning for students and residents training at the hospital.
The other $200,000 grant, which will be paid over a five-year period, was awarded to Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine to name the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine lab at its new Cleveland Campus. The lab was officially dedicated in August at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new OU-HCOM building at Cleveland Clinic SouthPointe Hospital in Warrensville Heights, Ohio.
“The OMM Lab will be a constant reminder to students in Northeast Ohio of the important role the Western Reserve District DOs played in the creation of the college 40 years ago,” said OOF Board Chairman Robert W. Hostoffer, Jr., DO.
OOF was gifted residual funds from the sale of Warren General Hospital in 2006. A committee consisting of Charles Curtiss, DO, Sandra Foster, PhD, and Harold O. Firster, DPM, advises the OOF Board on possible grants.
Founded in 1963, the OOF supports osteopathic education and research, scholarships and loans for osteopathic medical students, leadership development, public education, and physician health and wellness projects. OOF Board members are officers of the Ohio Osteopathic Association and others elected for three year terms by the OOA House of Delegates.
The OU-HCOM Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Lab features state of the art equipment. Students are greeted by a large sign commemorating Warren General Hospital at the lab's entrance.
