CMS Names New Medicare Contractor for Ohio

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced this week that Highmark Medical Services will replace National Government Services and Palmetto GBA as the new Medicare Parts A & B Contractor (MAC) in Ohio and Kentucky. Since Highmark is new to the region, there will be at least a six-month transition before it takes full control, during which CMS states Highmark will conduct extensive outreach to providers, associations and beneficiaries. Highmark will assume full responsibility for claims processing no later than March 2010. CMS' announcement of the final five contractors completes its goal to award all 15 Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) contracts in an effort to improve services to beneficiaries and providers in the Medicare fee-for-service program. The competitive selection of the new Part A and Part B MACs was made on a "best value" basis and these MACs will now be the contact for all Medicare providers and physicians.
